These ten titles are essential reading for anyone who wants to understand yaoi and BL manga at a deeper level — and they're all genuinely excellent stories in their own right.
1. Junjou Romantica — Shungiku Nakamura
Junjou Romantica is the gateway drug that brought Western audiences into BL manga in massive numbers. Three interwoven love stories — Romantica, Egoist, and Terrorist — each with distinct dynamics, humor, and emotional registers. The main couple, Misaki and Usagi-san, became icons of the genre. Three anime seasons, ongoing manga, and still one of the best-selling BL series of all time.
Why it matters: Set the template for modern BL manga storytelling in the West. Everything that came after it was in conversation with it.
2. Sekaiichi Hatsukoi — Shungiku Nakamura
Set in the BL manga publishing industry itself — a meta touch that BL fans adore — Sekaiichi Hatsukoi follows multiple couples navigating love and work. The main pair's history and the way their past shapes their present is handled with real emotional intelligence. Two anime seasons and a devoted fandom that's been active for over a decade.
3. Saezuru Tori wa Habatakanai — Yoneda Kou
The most critically acclaimed yaoi manga ever written. A yakuza BL that refuses to be a simple power fantasy — instead, it's a deeply empathetic character study of a man whose trauma shapes every relationship in his life. The art is stunning, the writing is dense with meaning, and every chapter feels earned. Saezuru has an anime film adaptation (2020) that is beautiful but barely scratches the surface of the manga's depth.

4. Finder Series — Ayano Yamane
One of the longest-running classic yaoi series, Finder put the yakuza/crime BL sub-genre on the map. Following photojournalist Akihito and yakuza boss Asami, the series is intense, dramatic, and enormously influential on every dark romance BL that followed it. Essential genre reading.
5. Given — Natsuki Kizu
Already a contemporary classic. Music as metaphor for grief and connection. The most emotionally resonant BL manga of its generation. If you've only watched the anime, you owe it to yourself to read the source material — the art communicates things that even excellent animation cannot.
6. Doukyuusei (Classmates) — Asumiko Nakamura
Short. Perfect. The story of two high school boys — a diligent student and a laid-back musician — falling for each other over the course of one school year. Nakamura's distinctive art style and the manga's quiet, observational pacing make it unlike anything else in the genre. The anime film adaptation (2016) is equally beautiful.
7. Ten Count — Rihito Takarai
A psychological BL that takes mysophobia (contamination OCD) as its central premise — and uses it to tell a story about trust, vulnerability, and the slow work of learning to let someone in. One of the best-selling BL titles on the SuBLime/Viz platform. Genuinely sophisticated handling of mental health themes.
8. Harukaze no Étranger — Nakataki Ichika
Consistently ranked among the all-time best yaoi manga on reader polls. A quiet, mature romance between an aspiring writer and a man recovering from heartbreak. Beautiful art, emotional honesty, and a conclusion that earns every tear. This is the BL manga people recommend when someone asks for "the best."
9. Kase-san and Morning Glories — Hiromi Takashima (GL)
The GL equivalent of a perfect classic. Two high school girls — the shy garden-club member Yamada and the athletic Kase-san — navigate their first relationship with warmth, humor, and genuine sweetness. Has an OVA adaptation. The gold standard for heartwarming GL manga.
10. Citrus — Saburouta (GL)
The gateway GL manga for a generation of Western readers. Two step-sisters, an intense rivalry, complicated feelings. Dramatically plotted, emotionally charged, and the title responsible for bringing many readers to GL. Has an anime adaptation. Essential genre history.
